However, area rugs can get dirty too as time goes. Homeowners must know how to clean and maintain area rugs to save money from the cost of buying a new one.

There are a few types of area rugs that you have to consider when you want to clean them.

Can You Use a Steam Cleaner on an Area Rug

Steam cleaning an area rug is a beautiful idea. Depending on your area rug’s type of fabric, you cannot just wash it with a laundry machine. Sometimes vacuuming may not already be enough to remove dirt, because of the stains that root deeply on it.

The only problem that you need to consider when steam cleaning an area rug is that the steam cleaning solution might damage your hardwood floors.

Therefore, you need to cover your floor surface first before steam cleaning the rug.

If you will steam clean your rug, here are the steps on how to do it.

  • Roll the area rug and place it in the corner.
  • Cover the hardwood surface with a waterproof cover like plastic.
  • Lay back the area rug.
  • Steam clean the rug and make sure to follow the directions stated on the solution.
  • Allow the rug to air dry for about 24 hours.
  • Roll the area rug again and place it in the corner.
  • Remove the covering you placed on the hardwood floor.
  • Lay back the area rug, and it is ready for use.

How Do You Clean an Area Rug Without Water

If you do not have a steam cleaner, you can still clean your area rug without using water on it. What you need is a baking soda. If you do not have a baking soda, use dish soap. You will also need a brush, bucket of warm water.

What you need to do first is get rid of dust by vacuuming the area rug. Sprinkle the stain with baking soda and use a brush to clean it. If you do not have a brush, a clean old cloth or old toothbrush will do.

Put some water on it and scrub it again. Do not soak the rug with water. Place enough water that will remove the stain and airdry.

The area rugs provide an excellent complement to your house’s furniture and ornaments. However, they can also break the beauty of a home remodel if they are dirty. Knowing how to clean area rugs is a useful skill that will make these rugs last for a long time and ensure that your house’s interior is always beautiful.
